EVA Marrero
A second-year MESM student, graduated from UC Berkeley in 2014 with a B.S. in Conservation and Resource Studies. There, Eva’s interest in marine welfare culminated in a thesis exploring threats to migratory whale species along the Pacific and Atlantic U.S. coastlines. After graduation, she interned with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society in Plymouth, MA. Her work here examined the detrimental effects of fishing and whale-watching on a humpback whale population through photo identification. Eva then interned for the International Marine Mammal Project in Berkeley, CA, and contributed research on tuna fisheries, bycatch trends worldwide, and the cetacean captivity industry in relation to international protections for wild whale populations. In 2017, Eva was hired at IMMP's fiscal sponsor organization Earth Island Institute, as a project manager. She held this supervisory role until her admission to graduate school. At Earth Island, Eva steered 33 project directors. She also learned many idiosyncrasies of the environmental non-profit sector. Eva specializes in Conservation Planning at the Bren School. Eventually, she intends to apply data science skills to the political work of establishing and enhancing existing marine protected areas along California’s coastline, in the interest of aiding passage for not only whale species, but myriad marine species that rely on migration for livelihood.
